The PAA is again presenting the “Novice Astronomy Classes”. This year the classes start anew as of this meeting and are focused on the practical aspects of learning astronomy. They will introduce you to astronomy related subjects at a very basic level, but in a logical sequence. This month's session is entitled “An Introduction to Astronomy”. This will include, Our Cosmic Address : Earth, Solar System, Milky Way, Local Group, Virgo Supercluster, and the Universe; Overview of Visible Objects; and a Sampling of Exotic Objects like, black holes, dark energy and dark matter. What is this all about? For those interested, be at the above mentioned meeting location by 6:00 p.m. The classes will run 45 minutes each session, before our regular meetings.
Before the main presentation, we will look at the “Sky This Month”. Be informed about the locations of the planets of the solar system and what is happening in the sky above us for the month to come.
Our main presentation for September will start shortly after 7:00 p.m. and this month, features club member Rick Stankiewicz, giving a talk entitled, “Out of This World – Coins of Astronomy and Space”. Rick will talk about his collecting of space and astronomy related coins from around the world. From Rick’s personal collection, you will see how coins are like time capsules that mark moments in history and help illustrate the chronology of astronomy and the “Space Race”. Don’t miss seeing and learning about a hobby that spans thousands of years. The price is right…it costs you nothing but your time.
There will also be the usual opportunities to come and check out the PAA and all it has to offer, also at no cost. This is an all ages meeting and the venue is barrier free. Also, you don’t need a telescope to belong, but a curious mind helps.
