The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel LLC announced today that nightly closures for renovations will end this week, and the tunnel will return to its normal 24/7 operation on July 19. The tunnel will remain open until mid-August, after which it will close for only one night per week through September 30, 2019.

This means that Transit Windsor service through the tunnel will return to regular hours as well starting July 19, 2019. For details on rates and hours visit transitwindsor.ca.

Complete news release from the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel LLC:

The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, which is nearing the completion of a $21.6 million renovation project, will return to normal hours, open 24 hours per day from July 19 through mid August, after which it will close for only one night per week through Sept. 30.

Travelers are directed to get real-time updates and traffic information online at www.dwtunnel.com, on Twitter @DetWinTunnel, on Facebook or on the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel mobile app, which is available on IOS or Android devices.

Construction began in late October 2017 and is expected to be completed this year. The tunnel had been closed during construction from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. Because a majority of tunnel users are commuters, the closure schedule was designed to complete the project as safely and quickly as possible, with the least disruption for the tunnel’s 12,000 daily users.

The work is funded by American Roads and Windsor Detroit Borderlink Limited. The project includes the replacement of the ceiling, as well as masonry, electrical work and other improvements.

American Roads is committed to conducting this work while causing the least amount of disruption to drivers. The company greatly appreciates the help and cooperation of its users, partners and the media during this important construction project!

Everyone is welcome to this completely free event, on Monday, 2nd Sept. 2019, in Brockville’s waterfront Hardy & Centennial Parks. The day will include a live local band (The G-Men), three bouncy castles/inflatables, a balloon twisting clown, children’s face painting, police cruiser, fire engine, a ‘live-on-location’ radio station, and a BBQ (where we plan to serve over 600 hot dogs and bottled water, at no cost to anyone in attendance). All of this is in celebration of the many contributions of labour, (unionized or not), to Ontario and to our Canadian society, as a whole. The achievements and goals of organized labour will also be shared with the public at various tents and tables.  This event is sponsored, organized, and run by the efforts of the members of your local labour council, in affiliation with the Canadian Labour Congress.
