Windsor’s Streetcar No. 351 restoration project is almost complete, and the fully restored landmark will be a spectacular symbol of our city’s history for the community to enjoy. With plans to place the streetcar on our waterfront for the public to appreciate, the City is looking to the community to help raise funds for the cost of the enclosure that will house it.

The “Preserve & Protect” fundraising campaign has officially launched with a goal of $100,000 within 351 days. The campaign is off to a great start, having already raised $20,000. In addition to raising funds for the enclosure, the City of Windsor has partnered with ENWIN Utilities and YourTV/Cogeco. Together, they will produce an educational video about the history of electricity and the streetcar, which will be viewed in schools. The streetcar will also be the focus of many school field trips.

Honorary fundraising chair Bob Pedler was the first official donor to the “Preserve & Protect” campaign and is thrilled to be involved with the project. Bob, along with Mayor Drew Dilkens invites rail enthusiasts, history buffs and the community to visit the official website at www.streetcar351.com. The new website will provide background, updates and videos on the restoration project, as well as options to purchase t-shirts and contribute to the campaign through online donation access.

Streetcar No. 351 will be the focal point of the Celestial Beacon, one of five beacons planned for the riverfront in the City’s Central Riverfront Implementation Plan. The Celestial Beacon is the farthest west, situated close to the University of Windsor and within the Windsor Sculpture Park. It was chosen for its beauty and amenities, like parking, washrooms and available utilities.

Citywide delivery of the calendars is expected to take four weeks.

Residents who do not receive a copy of the 2019-20 Collection Calendar by March 31, 2019 should call 311, and a copy will be mailed to them.
