The Municipality of Leamington is making sandbags and sand available for free to Leamington residents who want to take precaution against potential overland flooding.
Beginning Friday, May 10, residents can attend the Leamington Kinsmen Recreation Complex (LKRC) and show proof of Leamington residency (mail or billing information showing Leamington address also accepted) to obtain sandbags. LKRC hours of operation are available at www.leamington.ca/LKRChours.
Please note that residents will be limited to 100 sandbags per visit, but can return to obtain additional sandbags if needed.
A sandbag filling station and free sand is accessible at 435 Bevel Line Road (Bayview Dog Park). Sandbags are self-serve, and residents must bring their own shovels to fill the bags. The sandbag station will remain in place indefinitely, until further notice.
High water levels have put communities across Ontario in flood emergencies this spring, and while Leamington is not in an emergency state as of yet, flooding is expected to worsen as water levels continue to rise.
The Town of Amherstburg will be assisting with Sandbag distribution for residents of properties on the water’s edge from County Road 41 to
Malden Road, and additionally properties along the water in the South Riverview area.
Potentially affected residents within those areas can obtain up to 100 sand bags per property to begin their own preparation for a possible flooding event.
Bags can be obtained: Monday to Friday - 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Public Works Department, 512 Sandwich Street South
Saturdays -10:00 AM and 2:00 PM
Public Works South yard, 6744 Concession 6 South
Sand is also available at any time and located at:
Public Works South Yard, 6744 Concession 6 South
Bring your own shovel. Bags weigh approximately 40lbs when full please ensure your
vehicle can carry this weight safely. When picking up bags you will be required to
present proof of residence.
Only those properties at risk of flooding along water’s edge will be assisted at this time.
Residents looking to protect their property from flooding will be able to pick up free sandbags in Colchester starting Friday, May 10.
Up to 100 sandbags will be provided to Town of Essex residents. The sandbags will be available at Colchester Harbour (100 Jackson Street, Colchester) from 7am to 9pm daily. Harbour staff will be on-hand to distribute bags. Sand for the bags will also be available at Colchester Schoolhouse (195 Bagot Street, Colchester) during the same time period.
Sandbags will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
Residents seeking to pick-up bags and sand are asked to bring their own shovels. Equipment for filling sand bags will not be provided. Residents will also be responsible for future disposal of sandbags. Residents are asked to present government-issued identification or a property tax bill to confirm residency.
Kick up your heels and bring your partner every Wednesday 3-7pm. Enjoy a hearty $6 meal including dessert @ 5pm. Live music to dance to and fun for all. Everyone welcome.

In "A Message From Nature", H’artists and Canadian artist Katherine Porter create a joyful side-by-side exhibit, visually depicting an important reminder: appreciate the small things.
Join us for an afternoon and slow down, look close, and take in dozens of works including: pen and ink illustrations by H’artists, large new acrylic canvases by Porter, and a musical interlude by the H’art Choir with musician David Archibald at 3 p.m. each day.
100% of funds raised through art purchases will support Small Things, a major new dance production to premiere at the Isabel Bader Human Rights Arts Festival in April 2020.
H'art Centre is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to providing people with disabilities and those facing barriers with opportunities to study, enjoy, and produce works in the arts throughout their lives and as they age.
