One hundred years ago, massive unemployment, economic dislocation and social unrest greeted soldiers returning from the First World War. Labour revolt and strikes were widespread across Canada, the most notable being the Winnipeg General Strike of May-June 1919. Peterborough, then a manufacturing town, also witnessed strikes in this year. Professor Bryan Palmer will take us back to the aspirations of workers in 1919 when Canada was very different from today. Professor Palmer is a labour historian who has taught at McGill, Queen’s, Simon Fraser, and Trent where he was a Senior Canada Research Chair. He has authored, co-authored, or edited more than 20 books, a number of which have won awards.

Since 1940 the Canadian Hearing Society (CHS) has been a unique resource for Deaf and hard-of-hearing adults, children and their families. From sign language interpretation and instruction to training in speechreading, and from one-on-one language development to employment counselling, the Society has been helping Canadians overcome barriers to participation for generations. Whether one needs hearing testing, hearing aids or a wide range of devices for communication assistance and augmentation, like visual smoke detectors, alarm or baby monitors, they're all available through the CHS.

For the May installment of the KFPL Live monthly speakers’ series we are excited to welcome Jenny Thomson-Iwasaki and Debbie Hurry as they outline the services offered by the Canadian Hearing Society and give an introduction to Deaf Culture and American Sign Language.

This presentation will take place at the Isabel Turner Branch on Tuesday, May 14, at 7 p.m. and is open to adults.  There is no admission charge, but seating is limited.  To avoid disappointment, please register in advance (at events.kfpl.ca) or by phone (at 613- 549-8888) as of 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 4.
