The Salvation Army will kick off its 2018 Christmas Kettle Campaign on Thursday, November 15 at the Windsor Spitfires game. The Spitfires captain will make the first donation to the campaign prior to puck drop. This year’s campaign goal is $320,000.

“Our volunteers are the driving force behind this campaign. We have five-thousand volunteer hours to fill so we strongly rely on our compassionate bell ringers to donate their time,” says Shannon Wise, Salvation Army public relations representative. “If we have enough volunteers, we will be able to make sure no family or individual in Windsor goes without this Christmas. It’s a complete community effort that we deeply appreciate.”

Donations from the annual Christmas campaign support The Salvation Army Windsor Centre of Hope food bank, community meal program, life skills programs and of course, food and toys at Christmas for low-income families in Windsor.

Last year 12,157 individuals received assistance from the food bank and 1,500 children received toys from The Salvation Army during the Christmas season.

Kettle shifts begin on November 15 and end on Christmas Eve. To volunteer to be a bell ringer call (519) 971.5878, sign up online at www.windsorchristmaskettles.ca or email kettles@salvationarmywindsor.ca

Sometimes, simply getting to cancer treatment can be a challenge. In Ontario, 1 in 5 cancer patients can’t get to their lifesaving appointments.

“As a volunteer driver for the Canadian Cancer Society, I have seen firsthand that the Wheels of Hope program truly eases the burden of the patient and their families. Whether their concern is making it to different cancer-related appointments, rearranging work schedules to get their loved ones to and from these appointments, or not having the means to get back and forth - I haven't run into one patient that wasn't grateful for Wheels of Hope and the drivers.” – John Campbell, Volunteer Driver for the Canadian Cancer Society for 6 years.

Help John and volunteers at the Canadian Cancer Society ensure our neighbours have safe, reliable transportation to all their cancer-related appointments with the Pigs of Hope campaign. Adopt a Piggy Bank for the holidays and fill your piglet’s belly with enough coins to fund a ride to treatment. Name it, dress it up and bring it to all your holiday parties. Contest for best dressed and best named pig. Keep in mind, their favourite snack is a toonie!

This holiday season, let’s ensure our family, friends & neighbours focus on getting well, not on how they will get to treatment.

To adopt a pig, call/email the barn (aka the Canadian Cancer Society office) or stop by during regular business hours:

2-3201 Marentette (directly behind Devonshire Mall). Open Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm. 519-254-5116, essex@ontario.cancer.ca
