The Town of Tecumseh, in partnership with the Olde Sandwich South and Area Historical Society (OSSAHS), is pleased to announce the opening of the Sandwich South Cultural and Resource Centre. This brand new building is located next to Tecumseh Fire Station #2 at 5520 Walker Road in Oldcastle. A grand opening event will be held September 30 at 1:00 p.m. Residents past and present are invited and there will be entertainment, fire truck rides for kids, food and refreshments.
“This has been a long time coming and is a dream come true for residents in the former Sandwich South,” said Wendy Pulleyblank-Cunningham, Chair OSSAHS. “We have had great support from our council and the community in preserving our rich history. The Town now has a place where anyone can come and learn about the rich and diverse history of the area.”
The Centre has artifacts from the Sandwich South community and features treasures in the areas of sports, agriculture, religion, politics, ancestry and community. The Sandwich South community is celebrating 125 years this year and the OSSAHS celebrates 20 years.
“This new resource Centre reinforces the Town of Tecumseh motto that we are A Community that is Proud of the Past and Confident in the Future,” said Gary McNamara, Mayor. ”My Council colleagues and I are pleased to have supported such a dynamic resource in our Town. I encourage everyone to visit the Centre and learn more about this part of the municipality’s past.”
The Cultural and Resource Centre was the result of a request from the OSSAHS, presented to Council in the fall of 2017. Many artifacts have been gathered by OSSAHS members over the past 20 years and now have found a permanent home to be displayed.
The OSSAHS has done some fundraising for this project but still needs help from either Corporate Sponsors or Private Donations. The OSSAHS also welcomes volunteers to get involved. If anyone in the community is interested in becoming involved please email sshistoricalsociety@gmail.com
Following the grand opening, the Centre will be open each Saturday morning 9am-12noon (or by appointment) with volunteers on hand to staff the building.
