County Road 9 (Howard Avenue) will be closed at County Road 18 (Pike Road) to through traffic starting on Tuesday, July 3 to facilitate the removal and replacement of a road crossing culvert. This closure is expected to last four weeks. Detour routes will be posted.

During this time, no access will be permitted through the construction zone. Howard Avenue will remain open to local traffic only up to the road closure for northbound motorists, but will not be permitted through the construction zone.

The Town reminds residents that during construction traffic disruptions will occur and some delays may be experienced. Please slow down, obey all traffic signage, and follow all posted detour routes.

The Rotary Club of Essex and Rotary Club of Windsor 1918 are back with another Fish Fry benefit to support an upcoming mission trip to Ghana. The event will feature a delicious perch dinner with all the trimmings, musical entertainment, silent auction, and a raffle.

Rotary members believe that they have a shared responsibility to take action to tackle some of the world’s most pressing challenges. Clean water is essential to life; yet, millions lack access to this basic, fundamental element.

Proceeds from this event will support the drilling of water wells in Ghana, Africa where access to fresh, clean water is lacking in so many villages.

The 5th annual Face of Woofa-Roo contest invites animal lovers to enter their pets for a chance to be declared the cutest of the year.

Now through July 6 pet owners can submit an original photo of their pet as part of this fun contest. All pets are welcome — cats, dogs, birds, hamsters, you name it!

Eligible entries received during the entry period are evaluated by a panel of judges, who select the 32 qualifying photos which best meet the judges’ criteria including originality, overall appeal and composition.

Pet lovers will then have the opportunity to vote for their favourites until one grand prize-winner is selected.

The voting period begins July 13 at noon with 32 qualifying pets displayed head-to-head. The public votes for their favourite in each pair. At the end of the first voting period 16 pets move to the next round and pair off beginning July 16. The third round starts with eight pets July 17 followed by the final four facing off July 18. The two remaining pets go head-to-head July 19. Voting closes July 20 at 3 p.m.

The pet with the most votes in the final round is crowned the winner at 11:00 a.m. on July 21 at the Woofa-Roo Pet Fest at The Libro Centre, 3295 Meloche Road, Amherstburg.

“Pet owners throughout Windsor and Essex County love the Face of Woofa-Roo contest,” says Beverly Becker, director of local marketing for the Windsor Star. “We get hundreds of pet photos and thousands of pet lovers voting for their favourite every year. Not only is the winner the face of Woofa-Roo for the festival’s 2019 marketing campaign, they get full bragging rights.”

The Town of Tecumseh Senior Advisory Committee has received funding under the Ontario Sport and Recreation Communities Fund to host a ‘Senior Fitness Around Town’ Program.

Looking for new ways to get active for FREE? Interested in learning a new fitness program?

The Senior Fitness Around Town will provide Tecumseh residents the opportunity to participate in a variety of fitness programming to increase physical activity and help lead engaged, active and healthy lifestyles in a recreational environment.

Older adults (55+) and seniors will participate in approximately one-hour a week, physical activity over a six-week program period. Tecumseh older adults and seniors will be exposed to a different physical activity each week, during the six-week session, such as pickleball, aquafit and fitness programming.

Four (4) six-week sessions will be hosted from approximately June through to December 2018. Act fast - the first session starts June 28, 2018!

Each week, qualified instructors will teach an introductory level class. Participants will learn the fundamental movements of each activity, with an emphasis on continuing the physical activity beyond the session for lifelong health and well-being benefits.

Registered participants will receive their own fitness equipment related to each weekly activity, where applicable. Program costs, including fitness equipment, are provided under the Senior Fitness Around Town Program. Windsor City Council approved the purchase of a boat for transporting registered passengers to and from the island to make available this natural and historical attraction to those without their own personal watercraft.

Tours will run now until October 3, 2018. The cost is $5 per seat (2 years old and under are free).

The tours will operate Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting.

The first shuttle will depart Lakeview Park Marina at 10:00 a.m. and will continue every hour on the hour until the last departure from the marina at 2:00 p.m.

Passengers can return from the island on the half hour with the last shuttle returning from Peche Island at 3:30 p.m.

A maximum of 6 passengers can be on board each shuttle - to or from the island (excluding the captain).

No more than 12 passengers will be booked for each hourly departure time.

Anyone interested in a tour is advised to call 519-948-3383 to book their seat.  Waivers are mandatory and can be downloaded in advance from the Peche Island web page. Peche Island is an 86-acre island located on the Detroit River between Windsor and Detroit that was purchased by Hiram Walker in 1883. Walker used the island for a summer place, and his buildings included a stable, large home, greenhouse, and icehouse. The property was sold in 1907, and then the City of Windsor acquired the land from the Province of Ontario in 1999.  It is now a naturalized park with walking trails.

Thursday, July 12 to Sunday July 15 at Lakeview Park. This year's event offers far more than just water sports and "fun in the sun". From a fishing derby to lawn mower races, a carnival, parade, vendor booths, classic cruise car show and fantastic live entertainment, the Sunsplash Committee undoubtedly achieved their mission of providing a "memorable weekend" - appealing equally to young and old - for residents and visitors to the Lakeshore area. Among this year's highlights is a guest musical performance by London-based award-winning rock trio, Rose Cora Perry & The Truth Untold. Acclaimed one of the Top #10 indie talents across the whole of Canada, the band's Belle River debut on Friday July 13th at 6 pm is just one of many dates in their tireless Spring/Summer touring efforts. Sponsored by Belle River's On the Lake Business Improvement Area (BIA), admission, as always, is free and all ages are welcome to attend.
