Wall of Courage comes to The Firehall Theatre in Gananoque, Nov. 7-23.
Artist Heather Haynes has been working relentlessly for the last 5 years on this project that grew straight from her heart. Wall of Courage is a monolithic artwork installation consisting of 80 canvases, depicting orphaned children from Democratic Republic of Congo. The artwork that took Haynes three years to create, has now in the last year, been shown across North America.
The Firehall Theatre has been on my wish list of places to exhibit the Wall for the last two years… When I went to the Kingston Prize Portrait show in 2015, I was beginning to dream of locations to show my art installation. I was down to painting the final 10 pieces of my goal of 80 paintings. When I walked through the Kingston Prize art show two years ago I had a heart warming feeling that I would show the Wall here and it would be fantastic."
That dream is coming true as Haynes is set to install Wall of Courage in The Firehall Theatre on Monday Nov. 6th and open the doors to the public from Nov. 7-23rd from 11am-5pm daily.
Melissa Pearce, Director of Development at The Thousand Islands Playhouse pushed to make this dream a reality. "Heather and her family have brought many communities together for change and now we have the opportunity to join this collaboration of dedicated people. The Firehall Theatre is the perfect venue to display Heather's stunning work of art while gathering our own community together to support this great cause. We are truly honoured that Heather has chosen the Playhouse to share her knowledge, passion and life's work.”
Because this space is so unique, Haynes and fellow organizers put their heads together and thought of ways to best utilize this opportunity in order to get the Wall in front of as many eyes as possible. They are hosting a sold-out fundraising gourmet dinner on Nov. 9th for 80 people (80 paintings). Local chefs and restaurants have come together to donate their services to bring a unique evening of collaboration. Worlds collide as chefs from Olivea, Chien Noir, Riva and The Socialist Pig create dishes inspired by Africa! A night as unique as the paintings that will adorn the wall they will be dining will occur.
Opening Reception with Artist talk and documentary screening “Beyond the Wall” will be held Saturday Nov. 11th. Heather will share the journey of Wall of Courage and the projects that exhibiting the Wall has helped to inspire in the Democratic Republic of Congo. What began as a trip to interview women of the Congo in 2011 has now grown into a full fledged community empowerment project supporting 450 children in education, 130 orphans, a women’s training centre supporting 79 women, an agriculture project, two medical clinics that are being built presently in collaboration with DoTerra Oils Healing Hands Initiative and Cura for the World NGO. On the books for next year, a school building on the Island of Idjwi and creating a sustainable project for the Pigmy people who are suffering.
“I believe that if we walk into the world with an open heart and actually take the time to share experiences with others we may just find a way to help make someones life a little better. The crack of light begins to shine and that’s when things start to grow.” Haynes is proof that stepping into this space can actually create something meaningful and beautiful. From her art to her heart she is changing the way people see things. She adds “..Inspiring others to do something, is my purpose”.
“I had a moment with a Congolese girl who had been tortured by rebel soldiers in 2012. This moment changed my life and I gave myself over to a higher purpose. I don’t know where I am going, but I certainly can look behind and see exactly how I got here… it was from making good choices and aligning myself with my truth. Not always easy but truly gratifying.
Without the help and love of her husband jeff Montgomery and support from both sisters, parents and surrounding family members, none of this would have been possible. "They give me strength to carry on when my light dims to a flicker. Love.. that’s what it’s all about. It’s our family's ability to grow in size."
November 17th will see the Wall used as a backdrop for an Evening of Song. Jeff Montgomery will lead a group of musicians through a night of song whose voices will support the children without a voice. $10 at the door.
On November 18th Melissa Pearce, The Ledger Room and other yoga teachers from the community will be leading an all levels yoga practice of love, along with a final yoga nidra shavasna led by Darin Madore of Shanti retreat on Wolfe Island. $20 in advance or at the door if space available.
