Mark your calendars!  The Horticultural Societies of Fergus & District and Elora & Salem are jointly organizing the 5th annual Centre Wellington Seedy Saturday on Saturday, March 16th, 2024.

There will be something of interest for everyone, regardless of age, gardening experience, and expertise as a seed enthusiast. The organizers have lined up a diverse group of vendors, community groups, educational and advisory services. Workshops will be held in the Reading Room of the Archives on the topics of saving, storing, and starting of seeds, as well as vermiculture and vermicomposting (i.e. gardening with worms!).

All donations of seeds for the free exchange table will be gratefully accepted. Seed envelopes will be made freely available at Horticultural Society monthly meetings. Envelopes should be labelled to show the seed variety, colour (if flowering varieties), and the year the seeds were harvested.

For an enjoyable and informative day out, please plan to join us, browse the vendor tables, exchange seeds, meet your neighbours, share stories and gather information on a wide variety of topics, such as genetic diversity, pollination, working with nature, etc. A Children’s Activity Corner will also be available for the youngsters in attendance.

Community Event - Peterborough/Lindsay - Quilters welcome fabric fans to ‘bee’ at Trent

After record-breaking attendance in 2023, the Trent Evening Quilters invite community members with a love of art and quilting back to join them for a sewing bee and quilt show on April 20-21. The quilt-in is an annual show that arises from Curve Lake artist Alice Williams’ residency at Champlain College 25 years ago.

This quilt group began in 1999, so working women could participate, learn and grow their art of quilting. Previously, all quilt guilds in the region met during the day.

In 2001, the Quilters started hosting a quilt-in at Champlain College’s Great Hall where visitors can see them working on current projects and ask questions about quilt arts. The event has become a popular attraction for other quilters, aspiring quilters and people interested in how quilts are made.

“This event reflects our long-standing relationship with Trent University,” says Barb Dummitt, one of the founding members. “We welcome students and adults with an interest in reusing materials to create new pieces of art. Ultimately, we invite people to come see how we create our artwork so they can make their own.”

The celebration runs on Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 11 from 10 am to 3 pm on both days. Admission is free and birthday cake is served on the Saturday. The Quilters’ Bolt will have a booth at the event to sell colourful supplies.

Everyone is welcome to drop in to visit over the two days.
