FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Free workshop aimed at reducing retirement anxiety

February 3, 2023, Peterborough, Ontario – Covid lockdowns, rising inflation and lack of affordable housing are all resulting in an increase in anxiety among those contemplating retirement, or already retired, say local financial and housing experts.  “Those clients we see that are 55+ are increasingly concerned that the retirement they envisioned may no longer be attainable given the high cost of housing and the erosion of savings due to inflation,”  says Joe Curry, President and Financial Advisor of Matthews & Associates. Trish Eckersley, a Seniors Real Estate Specialist with The Platinum Team agrees:  “Many seniors who reach out to us want to age in place, but aren’t sure what their options are for doing so.  We can help them find the necessary supports they need so they can remain at home safely.”   In fact, the Platinum Team has sent some of its agents for special education and certification in the area of seniors housing options to help those 55+ put in place an immediate, intermediate and long-term housing strategy as health, mobility, and finances change over a decades-long retirement scenario.  “Many folks who reach out to us think there are only three options: stay in their home, go to a retirement residence or enter long term care, but actually there are more like 7-10 housing options out there,” says Eckersley.

On February 15th at 1:30 p.m., Eckersley, her team partner Paul Mason, and Curry will offer a free information workshop in partnership with St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church located at The Mount Community Centre at 1545 Monaghan Road.  “I visit many seniors in their home and have noticed the stress level rising as they contemplate their futures,” says Pastor Debora Rolls.  “They want to protect their nest egg and are worried they might outlive their money.  We hope to alleviate some of this anxiety by bringing in financial and housing experts to educate them on different options, explain various government programs and grants available to make their homes more accessible and much more.”  This workshop is open to the public. Given anticipated demand, the organizers request that you register in advance to secure a spot.  To do so call St. Paul’s at 705-745-1511, or email them at office@stpaulspeterborough.ca.
