Community Event - Niagara - Hugh Fraser: Swing Beam Barns of Niagara

In 2019, Hugh Fraser published Swing Beam Barns of Niagara: Stories of 50 Barns Built in Ontario Circa 1819-1884. These barns were built for wheat, the big crop of early pioneers. Each book chapter commences with an imagined conversation about a real local history event that happened when the barns were built. One barn owner participates in the first ice hockey game ever played in 1839; another witnesses a mysterious sickness killing thousands in 1833. Sound familiar?

Join us online and learn about an important part of Niagara’s history as Hugh shares photos, stories, and discusses how he came to write this unique book.

Peterborough Historical Society virtual public talk. Speaker Professor Michael Peterman. Canadians are familiar with the writings of Catharine Parr Traill and Susanna Moodie, the Strickland sisters who immigrated with their husbands to the Peterborough area in its pioneer days. Less well-known are the many other accomplished writers who lived and wrote in the area. Michael Peterman, Emeritus Professor of English literature at Trent University, has studied the rich literary history of the region and written extensively about it. In this episode of PHS Talks, he reflects upon this remarkable contribution to Canadian literature.
