Transit Windsor is providing additional buses for Canadian participants attending the annual Detroit Free Press Marathon on Sunday, October 20. Buses depart Windsor International Transit Terminal (WITT), 300 Chatham Street West, beginning at 5:00 a.m. and run on demand until 5:45 a.m. Return trips from Mariner’s Church stop will depart at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The fare is $5.00 each way. Customer Service at the terminal will be open at 4:45 a.m. on the morning of the marathon for participants to purchase tunnel bus tickets. You may also buy tickets in advance at the Transit Centre, WITT, downtown Shoppers Drug Mart or municipal Customer Care Centres.

The Windsor-Detroit Tunnel will be closed to all vehicular traffic at 6:45 a.m. and reopen by 10:00 a.m. Therefore, the first tunnel bus trip of the published schedule will leave Windsor at 10:00 a.m., and the bus will stop and drop off passengers only at the tunnel platform next to Mariners’ Church until the streets in downtown Detroit are open to traffic.

Lions fans attending the game at Ford Field:
Due to the routing of the marathon, Transit Windsor will be dropping off football game passengers at the tunnel exit. Passengers can take the People Mover and disembark at the Broadway Station or walk to Ford Field. At the conclusion of the game, passengers will be picked up at the regular stop on Gratiot.

Through a creative and collaborative effort, three organizations are coming together to offer free personal support worker certificate training for qualified students to meet the growing demand for Personal Support Workers (PSWs) in the field. PSWs are essential in helping patients remain at home, assisting in delivering home and community care, and providing services in long-term care and retirement homes.

The growing demand for PSW care is felt in all communities across the Erie St. Clair LHIN region, and this free program is a way for students to access a PSW certificate program at no cost to them. SE Career College of Health and Personal Support Worker (PSW) programs are registered and approved by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. Not only is the program free to students, they will also be paid to attend the course for the first four weeks. For those students who may not want to take the full PSW course, they can graduate as a Home Support Worker (HSW) in four weeks. The location for the course does vary and will move throughout the LHIN region.

The next free program is October 21, 2019 in Leamington and includes:

  • Four weeks of free Home Support Worker (HSW) training: Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
  • Five months of free Personal Support Worker (PSW) training: Monday – Friday 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

People interested in the PSW or HSW program can contact any of the three employers to access the free program:

October 23, 7pm at Olde Walkerville Theatre, twelve of the Windsor area’s best artists will compete across three fast-paced rounds for audience votes and a chance to enter this year’s Art Battle National Tournament. The audience will circle the competitors in each round, and choose their favourite paintings to move forward. After the Final Round, only one Champion will remain and audience members can take home their favourite painting by bidding in our silent auction!

These competitors are a mix of veteran professional artists and emerging talents who want to share their process and talent with a new audience. Featured painters include Gulnaz Turdalieva, who loves “the idea of creating under time restrictions,” as well as Jeff Denomme, who is looking forward to sharing his “fun, character driven art [that] balances cute and scary” with the Art Battle community. Art Battle invites culture enthusiasts, painters, art collectors, art party lovers, and the entire Windsor community to join the experience and vote for the next Art Battle Champion!

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Cardiac Wellness program at Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare. This program aids individuals who have suffered a cardiac incident in rehabilitation and provides them with the knowledge to improve their dietary and physical activity levels in order to live with improved health and wellness.  This six month program focuses on individuals working together with healthcare professionals to develop a plan of action that best fits each patients’ personal needs. The inter-professional team may include supervisory Physicians, Registered Kinesiologists, Cardiac Rehab Specialists, Registered Dietitians, Nurse Practitioners, and Social Workers.

Art Battle® has been sharing live painting competitions and incredible artistic performances with audiences since 2001. Today, across the country and around the globe, we celebrate live talent by turning a blank canvas into a work of art. Windsor is one of more than 100 cities on 6 continents with tens of thousands of competitors from Brooklyn to Bangladesh, São Paulo to San Francisco, and many more.

Art Battle Windsor welcomes local media and notables to join us on the night of the competition, and to share the stories of this diverse group of talented creators. Anyone interested in applying to be a special voting delegate should email hello@artbattle.com

Public Notices/Announcements - Peterborough/Lindsay - Peterborough Astronomical Association Monthly Mtg.

The third meeting of the Peterborough Astronomical Association's Fall program will take place on November 1st in the customary location  at the Rotary Education Centre/Guest Services Building, Riverview Park Zoo, Peterborough at 7pm.

This year’s “Novice Astronomy Classes” are focused on the practical aspects of learning about astronomy. You will introduce to astronomy related subjects at a very basic level, but in a logical sequence.  This month's session is entitled “The Sun, Earth, Moon System”. Learn about the day and night-time cycles, Solar and Lunar Eclipses and all the phases of the Moon. Questions will be answered, like why we have seasons and what influence the Moon has on the Earth (tides, stabilization, etc.). Come out and see how our Solar System works. If you are interested, be at the above mentioned meeting location by 6:00 p.m. The classes will run 45 minutes each session, before our regular meetings.

Before the main presentation, we will look at the “Sky This Month”. Be informed about the locations of the planets of the solar system and what is happening in the sky above us for the month to come.

Our main presentation for November will start shortly after 7:00 p.m. and this month, it will feature PAA Member, Sean Dunne’s talk, “A Photographic Journey through the Messier List of Deep Sky Objects”. About a year ago Sean got interested in putting his photographic and astronomy interests together and photographing all 110 deep sky objects in the famous Charles Messier List.  While it is possible, further south, to observe all 110 objects in a single 24 hour period, Sean does not  like to stay up all night, so he went at a more leisurely pace. Starting in March this year, he completed the List in August. This presentation is about his plan, equipment, trials and tribulations and the lessons learned in achieving his photographic goal. This talk will be a perfect example of what you can find to look at in the night sky by using your unaided eyes, but also with the use of binoculars and a telescope. Sean’s use of camera to capture his “objects” is a challenge that is worth learning from. Come out and learn about the night sky, the price is right…it costs you nothing but your time.

There will also be the usual opportunities to come and check out the PAA and all it has to offer, also at no cost. This is an all ages meeting and  the venue is barrier free. Also, you don’t need a telescope to belong, but a curious mind helps.

Public Notices/Announcements - Peterborough/Lindsay - Rare - “Transit of Mercury” on Remembrance Day!

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on
1573475400 1573495200

This will be a Remembrance Day to remember because on November the 11th, 2019, the tiny planet Mercury will cross in front of the face of the Sun! This is called a “transit” and this won’t happen again in this part of Canada until May of 2049. Be a part of history, as there are only about 13 of these transits per century. They are rarer than lunar and solar eclipses.  You won’t want to miss this one or you will have to wait 30 years.

Come join the Peterborough Astronomical Association (PAA) to observe at this free public event (donations gratefully accepted), at Ashburnham Memorial Park on Armour Hill.

WARNING! Never look at the Sun without proper eye protection!

A number of safe solar filtered telescopes and binoculars will be set up and members of the PAA will be there to demonstrate and answer questions. Be early because the transit will commence after sunrise, about 7:36 a.m. and will continue until approximately 1:04 p.m.

This event is weather dependent, but if at any time in the 5 ½ hours it is clear, the PAA plans to be there to witness and share this event.
