Laughing Heals: A Night of Comedy in Support of Men’s Mental Health

Burlington – Capillary Wave Community, a local non-profit charity dedicated to supporting men’s mental health, is proud to present Laughing Heals, a one-of-a-kind comedy fundraiser featuring three of the area’s top comedians. The event will take place on Tuesday September 16th at the Blk Swan on Brant St. promising an evening filled with laughter, connection, and purpose.

Men’s mental health is an issue that touches families and communities everywhere, yet it often goes unspoken. Laughing Heals was created to shine a light on this important topic while offering a fun, uplifting experience for all.

“Laughter has always been a bridge between people—it breaks down walls, relieves stress, and reminds us that we’re not alone,” said Nelson Borges, founder of Capillary Wave Community. “This event isn’t just about raising money, it’s about raising awareness and creating hope.”

The night will feature:

  • Three Local Comedians bringing their best sets to the stage

  • Silent Auction & Prizes with proceeds supporting Capillary Wave Community programs

  • Community Connection with opportunities to learn more about men’s mental health initiatives

All proceeds will go directly toward supporting Capillary Wave Community’s mission of providing peer-led support groups, awareness campaigns, and resources for men navigating mental health challenges.

Community Event - Peterborough/Lindsay - Benefit Concert at The Salvation Army

Once again this year, Kenneth Beal, tenor from Würzburg Germany, and Charles Gerard, concert pianist from Oshawa, are combining their amazing talents to perform a Benefit Concert raising funds for the Breakfast Program at The Salvation Army in Peterborough.

The Breakfast Program operates from the Salvation Army church in downtown Peterborough five mornings a week, Monday through Friday, from 9:00 to 10:00am, and is funded entirely by donations. The Community and Family Services staff and many volunteers distribute breakfast meals to individuals, including adults and children, who line up looking for a meal to start the day. Since 2020, the numbers of people accessing these meals has increased significantly. Presently, on average, 600 breakfast meals are being served each week. The need has increased, and so has the cost of groceries. Without any government funding, The Salvation Army relies heavily on donations to keep the supply of food available.

The Benefit Concert is sponsored by the family of Lloyd Beal, Kenneth’s father, who volunteered many hours for the Breakfast Program. ALL ticket money and donations collected as a result of the concert will go directly to support this much-needed program. The Peterborough Salvation Army Trust Board has agreed to match dollar for dollar the amount of money raised through the concert. So a $20 ticket becomes a $40 donation!!

So, mark your calendars for Saturday, September 27th at 7:00pm for an evening of unmistakeably great music at The Salvation Army Peterborough Community Church. Tickets are $20, and are available by contacting JoAnne Leach at 705-760-5514, or by email djleach79@yahoo.ca. Tickets will also be available at the door. Please consider attending the concert and in doing so, support the provision of food to those in need.

St James Church presents a candlelight service of readings and music on Sunday 7 December at 4:30pm. A selection of seasonal hymns will be sung, the choir will sing anthems by J.S. Bach and H.C. Stewart, directed by Michael Capon, and Margaret Ford will play a piano solo.

The service symbolizes the journey from Advent to Christmas, from the Old Testament to the New, from darkness to light. The readings and music will explore the themes of creation and re-creation in the context of ancient prophecies, the birth of Christ, and visions for the future.
