An Afternoon with Jane Austen – Celebrating Jane Austen’s 250th Birthday will take place two Saturdays in July on the 19th and 26th. Music and gossip on the green (front lawn of the Manor) with our wonderful Nelles Manor Players actors and musicians. 

The show starts at 1:00 p.m.

Canada Day – July 1 – tours of the Manor will be by donation. 

The tours will be every half hour starting at 10:00 a.m. with the last tour at 3:00 p.m.

Harp’n Aboot will be making their debut at the Saturday June 28 Music at Nelles Manor performance. Harp’n Aboot is the duo of Doug Feaver and Ruth Sutherland. They will be playing some songs that are very old and traditional, and mixing those with new songs and pieces that they've written themselves. The music ranges from beautiful ballads to raucous hand-clappers. Hold on to your boots!

Background

Doug Feaver is a singer/songwriter/storyteller/performer from Grimsby Ontario who plays guitar, harmonica, boots, drums, banjo, bass, and sitar, and his roots are in rock, folk and bluegrass music. Ruth Sutherland is a professional singer/songwriter/harpist from Hamilton whose roots are in folk, Celtic, and classical music. She has a trained mezzo-soprano voice, and Doug doesn't! Together, they are two-thirds of the acclaimed Canadian Celtic trio Scantily Plaid, having performed in concerts and festivals across North America and Europe for over two decades ( www.scantilyplaid.com ). As a duo, Ruth and Doug are called "Harp'n aboot"  https://www.instagram.com/harpnaboot/  . They will be playing some songs that are very old and traditional, and mixing those with new songs and pieces that they've written themselves. Saturday June 14 is the annual Commemoration of the Engagement at the Forty. 

The flag raising will be at 11:00 a.m. 

There will be musket firings, cannon demonstrations, and mini militia for the children throughout the day. War of 1812 display.

Background

The Engagement at the Forty took place June 8, 1813, as part of the defense of Upper Canada during the War of 1812. The Forty – now Grimsby – was the location the American forces retreated to after the Battle of Stoney Creek. The British Navy, led by Admiral Yeo, attacked from Lake Ontario. Indigenous forces fired down on the Americans from the escarpment. The militias made their way from Stoney Creek. The Americans were taken by surprise and fled back to Fort George leaving anything they could not carry. The Americans did not come back through this way again.
