Calling BIPOC artists for CreateSpace Public Art Residency

Application closes February 12

The Town of Oakville has proudly partnered with STEPS Public Art to feature an emerging Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) artist at this year’s Ontario Culture Days Festival in October.

Eligible artists living, working, or studying in Oakville can apply for a spot in the virtual 2023 CreateSpace Public Art Residency program. Running from March to December 2023, this residency is open to early to mid-career BIPOC Canadian-based visual and media artists that meet the eligibility requirements. Applications close on Sunday, February 12, 2023. Visit the Recreation and Culture webpage on oakville.ca for details including how to apply online, FAQs, and more.

One Oakville-based artist will be selected for the program to create a 2D mural that will be debuted in Oakville during the Ontario Culture Days Festival in October. The entry selection panel is comprised of leading Black, Indigenous and racialized public art practitioners from across Canada.

This virtual residency will help the featured artist hone their skills through workshops, artist talks, and studio visits for a greater understanding of the public art process. They will also be exposed to networking opportunities with seasoned national artists, up to $10,000 in financial support including an honorarium, cost of art production and materials, and access to studio spaces in Oakville to create their mural.

The residency program is aimed at promoting the skills, relationships and practical experiences needed to build and advance community engaged public art practices. STEPS is committed to amplifying the voices of BIPOC community members who also identify as 2SLGBTQIA+, racialized, disabled and equity-deserving artists. Visit the CreateSpace Public Art Residency webpage to learn more about these artists and their projects.
