Oakville choristers use music to celebrate diversity and connection

Choirs set to perform a commissioned piece by award-winning composer, Waleed Abdulhamid

It’s been more than two years since all seven of the choirs that make up the Oakville Choir for Children and Youth (OC) have been able to sing together at a live performance. To mark their triumphant return to the stage on Saturday, May 7 at St. John’s United Church in Oakville, the OC will be performing a concert called Raise Your Voice: Music That Reflects Our Global Connections.

“On May 7, our audiences will hear the results of this survey in a musical program that presents a wide variety of languages and has been generated through personal connections from our singers,” said Pauls. “It’s a wonderful way to celebrate who we are as a community as we emerge from this pandemic together.”

The concert, which can be livestreamed or attended in-person, will include a special commissioned song called “Rafiki Yangu” written by award-winning, multi-instrumentalist Waleed Abdulhamid. When composing the piece, Abdulhamid’s goal was to give the choristers the experience of being in a marketplace or a boisterous community gathering in Sudan. Sung in both Swahili and English, his song is an uplifting, celebratory piece that includes the refrain: “We are the nation and the next generation! We are the voice! We are the people!”

2022 marks the platinum jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s ascension to the throne in 1952. In honour of this and Victoria Day, the Hastings County Historical Society and Belleville Public Library will host doctoral candidate Trevor Parsons of the University of Waterloo to discuss and contextualize a selection of diary entries as they relate to British North America.

Although she never set foot in Canada, Queen Victoria left lasting marks on her distant empire rivaled by few others of her time. From the Rebellions of 1837 to Confederation and beyond, Queen Victoria remained abreast of Canadian affairs detailing her reminiscences and opinions in her private diaries. We will see a unique insight into the innermost thoughts of Victoria and her fascination with Canada.
