Community Event - Cobourg/Port Hope - Book Launch: Your Roots Cast a Shadow
Your Roots Cast a Shadow explores where personal history intersects with global events to shape a family’s identity. From the bustling markets of Baghdad to the quiet streets of Stockholm, Topperman navigates the murky waters of history as she toggles between present and past, investigating the relationship between migration, politics, identity, and home. Her family stories bring history into the present as her paternal grandmother becomes the first woman allowed to buy groceries at her local Afghan market while her husband is tasked with building the road from Kabul to Jalalabad. Topperman’s Jewish grandfather, a rising star in the Communist Party, flees Poland at the start of WWII one step ahead of the Nazis, returning later only to be rejected by the Party for his Jewish faith. Topperman herself struggles with new cultural expectations and reconciling with estranged relatives.
The presentation will include a reading, followed by a discussion on genealogical research and the complexities of familial storytelling.

Community Event - Kingston - Month of the Military Child 50/50 Fundraiser
The Kingston Military Family Resource Centre (KMFRC) is thrilled to announce our Month of the Military Child Online 50/50 Fundraiser – Teal Up!
Get your tickets today and support a cause that directly impacts military families in our community.
"Teal Up for the Month of the Military Child" is a meaningful initiative to honour the unique challenges and sacrifices faced by military children. The colour teal was thoughtfully chosen as it represents all branches of the military: blue for the Air Force, green for the Army, and blue/white for the Navy. By wearing teal and participating in activities throughout the month of April, communities come together to celebrate and fuel the strength, resilience, and adaptability of military children, acknowledging their vital role in the military community.
Since 1994, the KMFRC has been Kingston’s primary resource for addressing the unique needs of Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) families during relocations, absences, and transitions. We take pride in delivering quality activities and services that support the evolving needs of CAF members and their loved ones.
Your participation in this fundraiser will enable us to enhance nationally funded services, provide exceptional child care support in times of need, and remain responsive to critical and urgent matters. With your generosity, we can also remove barriers to accessing key services and foster meaningful opportunities for connection and engagement – because connection is at the heart of building resilient military families.
The lucky winner will be contacted to claim their prize, but every ticket purchased is a win for our community.
Thank you for your invaluable support in helping us make a lasting difference. Together, we’re strengthening the foundation of our military family community!
