Janet Carnochan House Acquired by Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum

Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario – July 8, 2024 – The Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum proudly announces the acquisition of the historic Janet Carnochan house, marking a pivotal moment in the preservation of local heritage and the expansion of cultural resources in the region.

This represents a strategic move by the Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum to advance its mission of preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the region. In addition to serving as a vital piece of local history, the acquisition will also yield substantial benefits for the Museum’s ongoing renovation and expansion plans. The house, which is immediately adjacent to the museum, will allow for significantly reduced costs in the original expansion and renovation project.

The house holds historical significance as the former residence of Janet Carnochan, the founder of the Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum, and a distinguished educator, historian, and community leader. Carnochan’s legacy is deeply interwoven with the rich tapestry of Niagara-on-the-Lake's history.

Geoffrey and Lorraine Joyner, esteemed supporters of the museum, expressed their enthusiasm for the acquisition, stating, "The museum represents a cornerstone of our community's heritage, and we are thrilled to see this house become an integral part of the Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum. This acquisition underscores the Museum's commitment to preserving our shared history and enriching the cultural fabric of our town."

Lauren and Vaughn Goettler, avid patrons of heritage, echoed their sentiments, remarking, "The acquisition of the house by the museum is a testament to the enduring legacy of Janet Carnochan and the Museum's dedication to fostering a deeper appreciation for our local history and for this reason, we have decided to provide an additional donation to the museum’s campaign. We look forward to seeing how this historic landmark will enhance the cultural landscape of our community."

The Lord Mayor of Niagara-on-the-Lake, in recognition of the significance of this acquisition, conveyed his support, affirming, "The museum holds a special place in the heart of Niagara-on-the-Lake, and this acquisition represents a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to preserve and celebrate our heritage. I commend the museum for their vision and commitment to enriching our community."

Sarah Kaufman, Managing Director of the Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum, emphasized the transformative impact of the acquisition, stating, "The acquisition of the Janet Carnochan house is a momentous occasion for the Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum. Not only does it allow us to safeguard an important piece of our local history, but it also brings us one very big step closer to realizing our transformational expansion plans. We are grateful for the support of our donors, partners, and the community, and we look forward to welcoming visitors to experience our rich heritage."

The Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum invites the public to join in celebrating this momentous occasion and would be happy to hear from anybody interested in adding their own financial support to the museum’s Building History – Strengthening Community Campaign.
