New opportunities for medical practitioners to experience Muskoka have opened. The students from the Northern Ontario School of Medicine were welcomed to Bracebridge today as they start their clerkships in our two hospital sites.

Bracebridge and Huntsville Hospitals now feature a new safe space to help provide some added security for all patients.

Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare is one 128 hospitals across Ontario receiving funding from the government to do some facility and infrastructure upgrades. 

Huntsville Council hosted their regular meeting at the Algonquin Theatre on April 23. Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) made a presentation which was followed by questions from council. It seems some members of council and Mayor Scott Aitchison did not get what they were looking for and passed a motion to request the Ministry of Health dissolve MAHC. Bob Stone was the only councillor to vote against the motion. We have reached out to MAHC and awaiting their response. 

Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) went before District Council to ask for a capital reserve fund for future hospital funding. It had been said the funding would be used towards “an asset we don’t have right now”. This has caused quite a stir with the public, especially on social media, as some residents speculate that the funding would go towards a brand new hospital. 

MAHC CEO Natalie Bubela sat down with Cogeco News to answer to these allegations. 

The Capital Plan Task Force is hosting a public meeting on Thursday, Mar. 1 at the District Council Chambers in Bracebridge. The meeting will start at 5pm. However, residents wanting to speak at the meeting must register as a presenter by Monday, Feb. 26. More detailed information can be found on the MAHC website. 

MAHC is monitoring influenza levels in the community and is screening patients for flu-like symptoms both at Emergency Department triage and at Patient Registration. Anyone experiencing a sudden onset of fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, muscle and joint pain, and/or headache, must put on a mask. While these measures are in place for patients, visitors to the hospital come and go freely.

To prevent spreading viruses to others, clean your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub – especially before entering and after exiting a hospital room. Sneeze and cough into your elbow, and avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
