Many Volunteer opportunities are available with Life After Fifty! 

Want to help? The work of Life After Fifty depends heavily on the generosity of volunteers. There are many ways you can contribute. Interested individuals can call 519-254-1108 ext. 132 or email mhoevenaars@lifeafterfifty.ca

 

Volunteer opportunities include: 

Friendly Visitor 

  • Providing companionship (no personal care required) in a seniors home one hour a week. 
  • One hour visit once per week. Visits need to be done Mon-Fri between 8:30am-4:30pm
  • The senior is screened prior to visits and a staff will accompany you on your first visit. 
  • Police clearance is required 

 

Telephone Assurance Caller: 

  • Providing a friendly phone call to homebound seniors to ensure safety and general well-being 
  • Calls vary from once a week to 3 times a week
  • Calls much be made Mon - Fri between 8:30am and 4:30pm

 

Fitness Spotters: 

  • Supporting the fitness instructor to ensure participants are performing the exercises safely and correctly 
  • Must have some fitness experience
  • One class a week at the East Side Centre Wed, 1-2pm and Mon & Fri, 12:15-1:15pm 

Beginner Sewing Instructor: 

  • Providing beginner sewing instructions to our members
  • Must have sewing experience 
  • One class a week at the East Side Centre on Wed, 10am-12pm OR Fri, 10am-12pm or 1-3pm 

 

Acrylic Paint Instructor: 

  • Providing beginner painting classes to our members 
  • Must have painting experience 
  • At the East Side Centre. No details on times or days is available yet

 

LaSalle Cafe:

  • Serving prepared sandwiches, soups & snacks to LaSalle Civic Centre visitors 
  • One shift a week either Thurs or Fri, 11am-2pm 
  • Safe Food Handling certified required. LAF will reimburse course fee after 4 month volunteer commitment

 

Bingo: 

  • Greeting patrons and clearing tables at the bingo hall
  • Paradise Gaming Hall, Dougall Ave. 
  • A two-hour training workshop is required. Must be 19 years of age or over

 

50/50 Seller: 

  • Selling 50/50 tickets to members, staff and centre visitors 
  • Life After Fifty West Side Centre 
  • Tues/Thurs/Fri anytime between 9:30am and 2pm

WIFF is now accepting submissions for fiction or documentary feature films of 50 minutes or over. Short films must be less than 20 minutes. Submission deadline, September 5, 2018

Community Event - Niagara - Celebrate heritage at Ball's Falls

Set within the breathtaking Twenty Valley, Ball’s Falls Conservation Area offers spectacular scenery and natural beauty. Here you will discover Ball’s Falls has been lovingly maintained to its early mid 19th century industrial hamlet atmosphere featuring the original Ball family home, an operating flour mill, a lime kiln, a church, black smith shop, carriage shed, and more.

In addition to historical tours that take place on weekends, the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority is pleased to offer Heritage Days, taking place once a month in July, August, and September, highlighting heritage demonstrations which are sure to enhance the visitor experience. 

Heritage Days will include: 
-Blacksmith demonstrations in the blacksmith shop
-Grist Mill tour
-Niagara Handweavers and Spinners demonstration in the cabin
-Historical tours of the Ball Home

Come on out into nature, and learn all about Ball's Falls, and its heritage.

The Lawrence House hosts tis first "Artisans on the Lawn," Fri., Aug. 3 to Sat., Aug. 4.  Local artisans will be selling jewelry, fabric art, pottery and paintings in tents.  Harmony for Youth will supply a food area throughout the 2-day event.  Musicians Mike Blackmore & Sherry Abram will provide music on Fri. evening.  Sat. there will be face painting for the children and more musicians during the afternoon.  Admission is free.
