Meggan A. MacKenzie is a local children’s author and illustrator whose new book, Wonderfully Made, is being released on October 20th, 2018.  This is Meggan’s third book, having previously published What Does It Take? and Pergie’s Problem.  To celebrate the release of her new book, Meggan is also unveiling a Little Free Library for the neighbourhood to use and enjoy.

What is a Little Free Library?  A Little Free Library is a service that provides a book sharing box where people can take out a book or leave a book as a way of promoting and improving reading motivation and deepening community connectedness.  All books are free and the library is maintained by Meggan MacKenzie. She has filled out the necessary paperwork and provided the start up fee and is now a certified box steward. It is her hope to bring a love of reading within her neighbourhood.

Wonderfully Made is a faith-based story.  When a mother and her child snuggle in the sunshine some big ideas and questions about God arise. Why did God give us hands? Why did God give us a heart? Why did God make us? With a little prayer and an open ear the mother answers the child as God whispers to her.  A perfect story to start some important conversations with children of all ages.

The Little Free Library and Book Release will be on October 20th, 2018 between 1pm and 4 pm at 218 Oxley Drive in Chatham. Please contact  Meggan MacKenzie at megmackbooks@yahoo.com, call (519) 397 - 1115 or look at her website at www.megmackbooks.com

The Responsible Gambling Council (RGC) focuses on paying attention to how gambling feels during Problem Gambling Prevention Week which runs in Niagara Region from October 8 - 14.

People who experience mixed feelings about gambling, such as guilt, anxiety, and/or frustration, are encouraged to know the signs and recognize they are important warning signals.

According to the RGC, these feelings are there for a reason and ignoring them can only make a situation worse – impacting not just the person but also family and friends. That’s why it is important to pay attention to how gambling makes you feel – before it becomes a problem.

RGC research shows that approximately 3.4 per cent of Ontarians have a moderate to severe gambling problem.

During Problem Gambling Prevention Week, RGC is urging people to know the signs and listen carefully to how they feel about their gambling. The free to attend educational campaign includes tips on how people can take direct action to protect themselves and get free, confidential help.

Warning signs include:

• Feeling guilty, anxious, frustrated or worried about your gambling
• Thinking or talking more than usual about gambling
• Gambling more to win back losses
• Experiencing extreme highs from gambling wins and extreme lows from gambling losses
• Getting irritated more easily or having less patience when dealing with normal, everyday activities

The good news is that paying attention to how you feel about your gambling is the first step to early detection of a potential gambling problem.
