Two plaques in a small roadside park near Deseronto describe the Mohawks who landed on the shore of the Bay of Quinte in 1784. The plaques are in the proximity of the landing point where the Mohawks stepped ashore from their canoes. Perfect for a weekend road trip.
Road Trips in Hastings County: Thurlow Purchase
By the early 1700s, the Mississaugas (Anishinaabeg) had established settlements along the north shore of Lake Ontario. This territory had been occupied by the Mohawk (Iroquois) prior to the Mississauga moving into the region after the mid-17th territorial struggles between the two. This plaque reflects the final settlement of the purchase of these historic lands along the Moira River with the Alderville First Nation, descendants of the Mississaugas of this area. #yourtv #trulylocal #History #HastingsCounty #HCHS #RoadTrips
Road Trips in Hastings County: Founding of Tweed
During the 1830s a settlement, initially called Munroe's Mills and later Hungerford Mills, developed here on the Moira River. In 1850, when its population had reached approximately 100, it was surveyed and renamed Tweed by prominent millowner, James Jamieson. Born in Deseronto, Kerr attended schools here and in Toronto. With the outbreak of the First World War, he enlisted on September 22, 1914 with the 3rd Battalion Canadian Expeditionary Force. This plaque is located in Centennial Park in Deseronto.

This "remarkable little town" has the distinction of being home of Ontario's oldest municipal government. In 1998, Sidney Township (which included the village of Wallbridge) was amalgamated with the City of Quinte West.

In 1867 Ontario's first gold mine went into production and the community of Eldorado was founded. A number of small gold mines were subsequently established in southeastern Ontario, including the Deloro, Gilmour, Cordova, Feigle, Bannockburn and Golden Fleece. Eldorado is just north of Madoc on highway 62.
