PHS Speaker Series: Home Children

07:30 PM — 09:00 PM

Tuesday, September 16, 2025

Lions Community Centre,

347 Burnham Street,

7:30 p.m.

Speaker Marg Graham and Dianne Cosway

“Home Children”

From the late 1860’s until 1948, approximately 118,000 children of various ages were emigrated to Canada to serve as indentured farm workers and domestics. These children, known as home children, were sent by numerous organizations, including charities such as Barnardos, the largest sending organization.  Although Canadians believed these children to be orphans, only a small amount were true orphans.  Today, more than ten percent of the Canadians are descendants of these Children, many of who are unaware of their heritage.

The children were sent to Canadian farms under contracts with terms that required the children to be fed, clothed and sent to school.  A small fee would be paid for fostering younger children, older children would help with chores and more extended labour would be required for adolescents.  At 18 for boys and 21 for girls, the terms of indenture were to be discharged.  The clean, fresh air of Canadian farm was seen as a far better alternative to the slums of a big city.

Unfortunately, some of the children were exploited, neglected, abused and coerced, a form of human trafficking.

Marg Graham and Dianne Cosway, both residents of Trent Hills, will present details of the lives of Home Children and their contributions to Canada.  Marg has spent considerable time researching her family history, including her grandmother, Mary Mortimer, a home child, who was placed with the Barnardo organization at age 2.  She is a Director with Home Children Canada.   Since retiring, Dianne has dedicated her time to researching her father-in-law, Stafford Cosway, who was abandoned as an infant and sent to Canada to work as a farm hand.

The Peterborough Historical Society monthly speaker series takes place on the third Tuesday of September, October, November, January, February, March, and May. The meetings are being held at the Lions Club Centre on Burnham Street, starting at 7:30. Members, guests, and the general public are welcome.

PA Day Camp: Dino Digs

09:30 AM — 12:00 PM

Mankind’s fascination with dinosaurs began in the early 1800s when geology professor William Buckland identified the first ‘giant lizard’ bone. Fossil-mania continued throughout the 19th Century as early paleontologists continued their search for bigger and better dinosaur bones. In this program children will have fun with their own dino-digs and dinosaur crafts. Have fun with this PA Day Camp on Friday September 26, 2025 from 9:30am-noon. Cost per child is $25. Children are required to bring their own peanut free snack. Registration is required. This workshop is appropriate for children ages 6-12. For more information or to register a child please contact the museum at 705-743-9710.

Pierre Bensusan - One Guitar, One Voice - 50th Anniversary

07:00 PM — 08:30 PM

If World Music means the fusion of traditional, contemporary, jazz, classical and pop music, then Bensusan is one of the most eloquent World Music musicians of our time. A pianist in his beginnings then self-taught on the guitar, the originality of his style makes him one of today’s greatest guitarists and composers for the instrument. Also called “The Prince of DADGAD”, the Rose d’Or of the Montreux Festival, elected Best Guitarist of World Music by the readers of Guitar Player Magazine! His triple album “Encore” won the Grand Prix of the Independent Music Awards in the category Best Live Album… Since his first performances in 1974 in France, the guitarist has sold half a million albums and given thousands of concerts around the globe, both solo and through numerous collaborations.

Pierre Bensusan is an adventurer of unusual lands. His almost “sacred” music is an intimate and orchestral hymn, a solo crossing on a multi-shell Lowden guitar subjected to the natural elements with sound molecules and finger pulp on an ebony fingerboard for open tuning – an unique and transparent technique, under the fingers of an adventurous pilgrim.

International “Observe the Moon” Night

Saturday, October 4 to Sunday, October 5
08:00 PM — 11:59 AM

Mark October 4th on your calendar because it’s International “Observe the Moon” Night and the Peterborough Astronomical Association (PAA) is hosting a free, all ages, public event at the Harold Town Conservation Area, at 2611 Old Norwood Rd. and you are all invited! Whether you have astronomy gear or not, why not come out and be part of this worldwide event to celebrate our only “natural” satellite…the Moon! International Observe the Moon Night is a worldwide public event that encourages observation, appreciation and understanding of our Moon and its connection to space science, exploration, and human culture. This annual event connects scientists, educators, lunar enthusiasts and interested public from around the world as Canada prepares to be part of mankind’s return to the Moon next year!

On this night, a 12 day-old Moon will be nearing the end of its waxing gibbous phase, so the lunar disk will be over half lit, not only illuminating many craters across the moonscape, but also providing a “terminator” that will highlight the boundary between the light and “dark sides” of the Moon. Please plan to show up about 8:00 p.m. EDT, as sunset is about 7:30 p.m. but the Moon should be visible and remain so until after midnight. Spend as little or much time as you like, no gear required, as there will be a variety of telescopes and binoculars to observe the Moon throughout the evening provided by the PAA.

The included image is close to what you will see during the evening of October 4th.Who can resist the welcoming light of the Moon and all it has to offer? Come and explore our closest celestial neighbour, with like-minded “lunatics”…around the world!

Dress according to conditions and a reminder that this is a weather dependent event and will be cancelled if necessary. Please check the PAA website and/or Facebook page for updates the day of this event.
