It was an interesting year for the Town of Huntsville. Mayor Scott Aitchison talks about 2018, but also gives us a glimpse on what we can expect for 2019. 

We spoke with Bracebridge Mayor Graydon Smith to get a year-end review. The changes that community has seen this past year and the projects he is most looking forward to tackling in 2019.

The Table Men's Shelter, in Huntsville, reopened on Nov. 14, 2018. Now operating 24 hours a day, the guests are certainly grateful to have a warm place to stay until they can make ends meet. Mayors Scott Aitchison and Graydon Smith unveiled a new plaque to commemorate the history of the Stephenson Road 1 Bridge on Dec. 18.

It's a project to help preserve Parry Sound's history. The Museum on Tower Hill is looking for volunteers and funding to help them with their latest archives project.

The District of Muskoka is grateful to The Gravenhurst Rotary Club after receiving a large donation towards the Gateway Muskoka Homewonership Program.

An Etobicoke man is facing several drug-related charges, following a drug bust in Bracebridge. On Dec. 14 the Bracebridge Community Street Crime Unit conducted an investigation which led to a traffic stop. During this traffic stop, officers arrested the man for possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

On Dec. 15, a search warrant was executed in the man's hotel room. Officers found about 193 grams of cocaine, and approximately 12 grams of "purple heroin" which is a combination of heroin and fentanyl. Over $2,600 in Canadian currency was also seized. The total seizure is estimated at over $26,000.

Despite the success of this investigation, the OPP is becoming more concerned about what's coming to our communities.

Main St. Local Kitchen in Huntsville is hosting a fundraising event for a local family, who lost their home to an explosion. One of the family members is in hospital after sustaining burn injuries. The event is on Dec. 15 and 100 per cent of the proceeds will go to the family. 

Meantime, Denise Stoneman is also a postal worker and Local Canada Post RSMC (rural Delivery agent) has created a GoFundMe page to raise funds for the family. If you would like to make a donation, click here.
