Saturday June 14 is the annual Commemoration of the Engagement at the Forty. 

The flag raising will be at 11:00 a.m. 

There will be musket firings, cannon demonstrations, and mini militia for the children throughout the day. War of 1812 display.

Background

The Engagement at the Forty took place June 8, 1813, as part of the defense of Upper Canada during the War of 1812. The Forty – now Grimsby – was the location the American forces retreated to after the Battle of Stoney Creek. The British Navy, led by Admiral Yeo, attacked from Lake Ontario. Indigenous forces fired down on the Americans from the escarpment. The militias made their way from Stoney Creek. The Americans were taken by surprise and fled back to Fort George leaving anything they could not carry. The Americans did not come back through this way again.

This free-admission, all-ages community festival is being proudly presented in partnership with the Stamford Centre Volunteer Firemen’s Association (S.C.V.F.A.) — longtime supporters of local events and charities. Get ready for two days of live music with 13 bands, food trucks, retail vendors, and a Kid Zone with bouncy castles and pony rides for the family. On Saturday from 3–8 PM, we’re also hosting a classic car show in collaboration with Storm the Falls! Harp’n Aboot is the duo of Doug Feaver and Ruth Sutherland. They will be playing some songs that are very old and traditional, and mixing those with new songs and pieces that they've written themselves. The music ranges from beautiful ballads to raucous hand-clappers. Hold on to your boots! 

Bring your own chairs, blankets and even a picnic.

Background

Doug Feaver is a singer/songwriter/storyteller/performer from Grimsby Ontario who plays guitar, harmonica, boots, drums, banjo, bass, and sitar, and his roots are in rock, folk and bluegrass music. Ruth Sutherland is a professional singer/songwriter/harpist from Hamilton whose roots are in folk, Celtic, and classical music. She has a trained mezzo-soprano voice, and Doug doesn't! Together, they are two-thirds of the acclaimed Canadian Celtic trio Scantily Plaid, having performed in concerts and festivals across North America and Europe for over two decades ( www.scantilyplaid.com ). As a duo, Ruth and Doug are called "Harp'n aboot"  https://www.instagram.com/harpnaboot/  . They will be playing some songs that are very old and traditional, and mixing those with new songs and pieces that they've written themselves. The Bfit Centre is thrilled to launch the Fit to Care program - a 10-week movement and support program for caregivers 55+. 

Participants will be introduced to a variety of movement and exercise activities to support physical health and well-being, in addition to opportunities for social connection, information sharing, and resources for caregivers. 

Participation in this 10-week program is free!
