Canadore College offers safeTALK
There is no scientific evidence for why the third Monday in January is considered the the most depressing day of the year. Dubbed "Blue Monday", it has encouraged residents to talk more openly about mental health. In a move to raise more awareness about mental health to residents and students, Canadore College is offering a safeTALK program at the West Parry Sound campus. This program was funded by anonymous donors, which enables the program to be free to its participants.

Local health unit says it's a bad flu season
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit's Medical Officer of Health Dr. Charles Gardner has issued a declaration of widespread influenza activity in Simcoe Muskoka. The health unit says we are at or near the peak of influenza activity in our region, which can last for two to four weeks. To read more click here.
Huntsville Brewhouse to open in Spring 2018
Local dignitaries came together at the site of the new brew pub in Huntsville on Jan. 10 to kick off construction. Lake of Bays Brewing Company is hoping to open in late April or early May.
Order of Parry Sound awarded to local teacher
Mayor Jamie McGarvey hosted a New Year's Levee on Jan. 7. During the event, the mayor awarded the Order of Parry Sound to Parry Sound High School teacher Rick Lund.
A push to donate Loblaw gift cards to local food banks
Registration for the $25 Loblaw gift card is now open. You can register online here. There has been some talk circulating on social media for residents to donate said card to a local food bank. We spoke with The Table Soup Kitchen Foundation, to tell us how these gift cards would benefit the organization.

Nipissing University transfers ownership of the Bracebridge campus to Dewey Educational Group
BRACEBRIDGE, ON – On January 8, 2018 Nipissing University and the Town of Bracebridge welcomed representatives from Dewey Educational Group as the new owners of the educational facility located at 125 Wellington Street. Nipissing University has worked closely with the Town of Bracebridge to identify a new owner for the facility since Nipissing announced plans to consolidate the University’s programming at their main campus in North Bay in June 2015. The University finalized the sale of the facility to Dewey Educational Group in December 2017 with the ownership transfer taking place in March 2018. Read more.
