Coalition for a Better St. Catharines
Ed Smith is a member of the Coalition for a Better St. Catharines. The pressing issue for the organization continues to be the clean-up of the old GM site on Ontario Street. Ed joins Mike in studio to discuss the issue.
Virtual Canada Day Celebrations - NOTL
Canada Day celebrations are going virtual in Niagara-on-the-Lake this year. Mike Balsom spoke with Amanda Gamble from the Friends of Fort George to discuss the events they have planned.
Yvonne Van Lankveld
The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Fund is a registered charity, dedicated to raising funds that aid in the conserving Niagara's natural environment for present & future generations. The NPCF Speaker Series continues this June 30th with local nurse and author Yvonne van Langveld, reading from her novel "The Road to Alright". Yvonne joins Mike Balsom on Zoom to talk about her novel.
Erica and Josh Karbelnik
We are pleased to introduce you to Erica and Josh Karbelnik. Both competed recently in Food Network Canada's Top Chef Season 9 contest, with Erica winning the top prize and Josh at her side as her sous-chef. The former Niagara College Grads talk about their experience on the show and hint at possible plans for a new restaurant in the future. Congratulations Erica and Josh! Melissa Krist slid into the role of Brock University's Athletic Director at the beginning of June. She arrives at Brock after serving in various roles at the University of Toronto for 25 years. Melissa joins Mike Balsom on Zoom to talk about her first month on the job and her hopes for the 900+ student athletes at Brock in the coming year.
Jerry Zremski - The Buffalo News
Both Canada and the U.S. revealed this week that the border between the two countries will remain closed until at least July 21st. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to ease some restrictions for travelers in the coming weeks, but residents on both sides are itching tor a reopening. Jerry Zremski of the Buffalo News joins Mike Balsom on Zoom to discuss some frustration from residents in Western New York.
Guillaume Boucard - Niagara River Lions
The Niagara River Lions open their CEBL season on June 24th in Ottawa against the BlackJacks. Guillaume Boucard, a forward for the River Lions is returning for his 4th season on the team and is looking forward to competing again in Canada. He recently returned from France where he had another stellar year for the Mulhouse Basket Agglomeration! Mike Balsom files this report.
Bryan Rose & Elisabeth Graham
The Federal Government has released details of its spending on its Healthy Communities Initiative. Niagara is set to receive more than $100,000 allocated to five different communities. Bryan Rose of the Niagara Community Foundation and Elisabeth Graham of Heartland Forest check in with Mike Balsom to explain the announcement.
Dr. Karim Ali - June 22nd
More shipments of COVID-19 vaccines are set to arrive in Niagara and more clinics are scheduled to to open throughout the region. Dr. Karim Ali, Director of Infectious Diseases at Niagara Health is encouraging all residents to get vaccinated. Mike Balsom brings you this report.
David Oakes
David Oakes will take over the position of CAO for the City of St. Catharines on August 1st. He joined Mike Balsom in studio to discuss his new position and his hopes for Niagara's largest populated city in the coming years.
The Rotary Club of Niagara Falls Sunrise "Rotary Ribs To Go"
The Rotary Club of Niagara Falls Sunrise continued their annual Father's Day weekend tradition, with their Rotary Ribfest taking place at Rapidsview Park. Because of the pandemic, guests were not able to leave their vehicles, but instead the ribbers brought the BBQ to their cars. The Source's Kennedy Reynolds was there and files this report.
